The SUBARU BOXER Engine

Enjoyable, Smooth Acceleration

The pistons in an in-line engine or a V engine generally move vertically. However, in the horizontally-opposed engine, the opposed pistons move horizontally and the opposing forces cancel each other out, thereby minimising vibration and providing a more comfortable drive feel.

Greater Stability for Easier Driving

Since the horizontally-opposed engine is structured with the pistons mounted horizontally, it has a lower total height and is more compact and lighter than an in-line engine or a V engine. This allows for level cornering and more stable high-speed driving, thereby helping to realise the SUBARU ideal of enhanced driving safety.

Cabin-protecting layout

In the event of a head-on collision, the SUBARU Boxer Engine and gearbox are designed to slide beneath the cabin. This reduces the risk of the engine intruding into the cabin and injuring the occupants.

FB20/FB25

The FB engine features a longer-stroke design and a more compact combustion layout than previous engine models. This helps improve usable-range torque and efficiency, while maintaining the smooth, sporty revving characteristics unique to the horizontally opposed engine.

Strong low-to-mid-range torque also delivers crisp acceleration response and improved real-world drivability. From urban driving to longer journeys, it provides a rewarding driving experience in a wide range of situations.

FA24/FA24 DIT

Delivering strong, flat torque from low revs to over 7,000 rpm, the FA24 provides drivers with a smooth, linear acceleration feel from start-off through to high-speed driving.

The FA24 DIT, developed for performance models, delivers strong, consistent torque across the rev range. Powerful yet easy to control, it offers enjoyable driving across a wide range of situations—from everyday use to more spirited driving.

Lineartronic

Lineartronic is SUBARU’s unique chain-type continuously variable transmission (CVT). By continuously selecting the optimal gear ratio and keeping the engine operating in its most efficient range, it contributes to improved fuel efficiency. Drivers can enjoy a linear response to accelerator input, along with a smooth ride free from shift shock.

E-6AT

The E-6AT was designed in pursuit of being lightweight and compact. Through direct control, quick gear shift response and a smooth feel have been achieved. The downshift blipping control featured in the SUBARU BRZ enables smooth gear shifting by synchronizing the engine speed when moving into lower gears and increases the enjoyment of driving a sports car.

6MT

SUBARU’s manual transmission achieves a crisp shift feel with rigidity. The gear ratio is optimized to enhance both fuel efficiency and driving performance. By individually developing the MT for applicable car models, SUBARU enhances the enjoyment of driving and the ability to control the vehicle at will.
